Heritage in your hands

The astrolabe.

Drag to turn it in your hands.

Long after the Prophet's time ﷺ, Muslim astronomers refined the astrolabe into one of the most ingenious instruments ever made. With it a person could tell the time of day or night, find the direction of prayer, work out the times for the five daily prayers, and measure the height of the sun and the stars.

For centuries it was the everyday tool of astronomers, navigators, and timekeepers across the Muslim world and beyond, and scholars wrote hundreds of works on how to use it. What you are turning here is a model built to explore, not a photograph of any single piece.
